The first significant series of El Niño storms have brought a deluge of rain to large portions of California. Some media reports have indicated that up to five inches of rain fell in some areas in a single day in Southern California during a week of passing storm systems.

All the rain has saturated the ground and caused mudslides and flooding in some areas. Thick snow has also blanketed many mountain communities in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, causing concerns for property owners about the condition of their roofs and ice dams.

“While all this precipitation is a welcome sign for our draught ridden state, this much rain all at once has caused significant property damage and more heavy rain showers are already being forecast for much of the rest of January,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Property owners, tenants and property managers should react to any flooding or water damage due to leaking roofs in a timely manner. Most wet building materials, furnishing and personal belongings that are not thoroughly dried with 48 hours can support the growth of mold causing potential health concerns and often significantly more expensive repairs.”

Inhalation exposure to mold is a known allergen, respiratory irritant, asthma trigger and some types of mold can even cause infections in people with a weakened immune system. Mold is not the only concern in storm damaged properties. Homes and businesses that have been flooded could have issues due to bacteria and other pathogens. Properties built up until the late 1970s could also have lead-based paints and asbestos-containing materials. If these materials are disturbed during cleanup, demolition or repair activities they could pose a risk to building occupants.

Helping California residents identify this indoor contaminants and hazards is LA Testing. They have multiple laboratories across the state that offer testing services for mold, bacteria, lead, asbestos and other substances associated with water damage and flooded properties. LA Testing also provides sampling supplies, monitoring equipment and even home test kits.
