Having experienced a marriage breakdown myself, I can tell you that you’ll find people who will make you feel bad about your decision; some will even try and convince you to go back. But those people usually aren’t happy within their own lives, and resent your bravery to move away from a situation that isn’t contributing to your happiness.

When Queensland life coach, Lorraine Enright said ‘I do’, she never expected that promise to break after 25 years, and see her marriage end in separation.

“There were signs that the marriage certainly wasn’t going that well. I kept telling myself it would get better. Looking back, it shows me that I didn’t think highly enough of myself; I never thought that I was worth it. I didn’t think I deserved true happiness or to feel adored,” Lorraine says. www.certitudelifecoaching.com.au

Through the process of coping with marriage separation, Lorraine admits she has learned to really like herself, her journey and her growth, and is enjoying her own company. “There is nothing bad about being alone,” she says. “Having experienced a marriage breakdown myself, I can tell you that you’ll find people who will make you feel bad about your decision; some will even try and convince you to go back. But those people usually aren’t happy within their own lives, and resent your bravery to move away from a situation that isn’t contributing to your happiness.”

Lorraine encourages people seeking guidance on how to get through separation to embrace who they are, instead of listening to others’ insecurities about their decision to walk away from the marriage. She shares these three tips with people who might be experiencing a similar situation:

1. Document thoughts and feelings, to help give clarity and provide a little insight into the mind. “I found relief in journaling through a recorder, because I struggled to concentrate and sit still for long enough to write. I let loose on that recorder, and no one was there to hear me or judge what I was saying or feeling. It was such a relief, and I let go of so much fear, anger and hurt in that way,” says Lorraine.

2. Go outside, and spend some time in nature. “Neutral outdoor places, like a park or near the ocean, helps with breathing, and shifts your mind into the present moment,” says Lorraine. “Spending time outside will help to create a more open awareness, and will bring you back to who you are and what you’re here to offer the world.” www.certitudelifecoaching.com.au

3. Listen to the body and mind. Lorraine says: “If you’re moving on after divorce or separation, it’s important to look at your thoughts, especially the ones that recur. If your recurring thoughts are full of fear or anger, they may block opportunities to help you heal and move forward.”

Marriage breakdowns always bring significant changes to at least two people’s lives, and coping with marriage separation is often difficult and challenging.  That’s why it’s important to ask for help, Lorraine says. “I’ve needed to be able to challenge myself, and the people who have helped me have been the ones who have held me accountable. I’m thankful for the fact that I have an opportunity to do other things even though they’re challenging. Life will only give us challenges that we can handle; it depends on how we choose to handle them.”
