California has suffered from more than four years of exceptionally dry weather, but that is likely to change soon if meteorological experts are correct with their expectations for this winter’s El Niño. This year’s El Niño is already the strongest on record according to some experts and it will likely bring heavy rains and snowfall that could soon impact much of California.

Approximately every two to seven years, El Niño conditions appear when an exceptionally warm area of water develops in the central and east-central equatorial region of the Pacific Ocean. The weather phenomenon not only impacts the ocean, but also changes weather patterns on land that typically result in heavy precipitation for California during the winter months.

“If we do indeed experience the types of deluges and heavy snowpack that so many are predicting this winter, property managers and owners should inspect their homes and commercial buildings now to make sure they will be able to weather the coming storms,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “An ounce of prevention could help avert costly property damage and prevent indoor environmental quality issues.  Preventive measures include checking roofing materials, shingles or roof tiles to make sure they are in good condition to handle the extra rain or snow; removing leaves and obstructions from gutters and downspouts and ensuring that water is draining away from the building; inspecting chimneys, sky lights and roof exhausts to ensure they are properly sealed; and making sure the building’s exterior, siding, doors and windows are weather tight.”

Heavy precipitation from a strong El Niño has historically meant devastating floods. Floodwaters may contain chemicals and harmful microorganisms, and any type of property damage to an older building could result in indoor environmental concerns due to the possible presence of lead-based paints and asbestos-containing materials. These materials may create exposure risks during cleanup, demolition and rebuilding activities if proper procedures are not followed. Even water damage due to rain and melting snow can result in the growth of mold indoors which can cause allergies, trigger asthma in some people, and some types of mold can even result in opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.

People that do suffer property damage due to this year’s El Niño can turn to the experts at LA Testing for inspection equipment, analytical services, sampling supplies and test kits. LA Testing also recently sponsored a video about preventing water damage and mold growth due to El Niño that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/o1_NhaXam94.
