Dr. Newman Announces New Local Anesthetic for Plastic Surgery

Dr. David Newman, a plastic surgeon in Temecula/Murrieta, has announced his use of Exparel.  He uses this new FDA-approved local anesthetic to treat patients who have had surgery and wish less downtime. It has been proven to reduce postoperative discomfort.  

Exparel is placed directly into tissues during surgery and gives relief of pain for three days. These are the days patients typically report discomfort. With less pain, patients can have a quicker recovery and be walking immediately after surgery.  

Surgeries where Exparel significantly reduces pain are tummy tucks (known as abdominoplasty). In a tummy tuck, excess skin is removed. Exparel can be injected into these tissues while the patient is asleep during surgery so that there is minimal skin discomfort, even right after the surgery. Tummy tucks help to flatten the abdomen because the muscle layer tightens during surgery. Exparel is injected into the muscle layers and area of “fascia” that surround the muscles also while the patient is asleep during the surgery. In this fashion, Exparel can reduce the tight feeling patients feel after an abdominoplasty. 

Getting patients moving quicker after surgery is not only important in getting patients back to their daily activities but also may help increase safety and promote healing. Doctors use Exparel in other types of surgeries and different surgical disciplines, like orthopedic surgery. Exparel administration has become part of many things that can now be done to enhance patient’s surgical experience by lessening discomfort, facilitate healing and get patients back to work and exercise.
