Earlier this month, KRON published a report about a fire at a business in San Francisco’s Mission District. The three-alarm blaze destroyed a building which contained an auto mechanic and tire store and also caused extensive damage to an apartment complex next door. Over 20 people who resided in the apartment building were displaced due to damage from the nearby fire and efforts to extinguish the blaze.

Structural fires can be devastating and cause widespread property damage even to neighboring buildings not directly touched by flames. Smoke from a fire can easily infiltrate nearby properties and result in smoke and soot damage. In addition to leaving behind unpleasant odors, discoloring materials and causing etching on surfaces, these residues could cause respiratory issues for building occupants.

“In addition to issues associated with smoke residues, water from the efforts of firefighters tackling a blaze in a neighboring property can also result in water damage to adjacent buildings,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “This moisture can lead to the growth of mold in as short as 48 hours. Exposure to mold can cause allergies, trigger asthma in some people, act as a respiratory irritant, and some types of mold can even cause infections in people with a weakened immune system. When these types of events occur in older buildings, there could also be exposure concerns associated with lead-based paints and asbestos-containing materials during cleanup, demolition and repair activities.”

LA Testing offers all of the sampling supplies and testing services needed to identify smoke residues, mold, asbestos, lead and other potential hazards in properties impacted by a fire. They have also sponsored an educational video about fire, smoke and water damage that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/8tEl-BOvwNw.
