American Association of Critical Care Nurses Athens Chapter Symposium

Atlanta, Georgia – WEBWIRE

"There is no such thing as too many EKGs." Amit Shah, MD, PhD, FACC

Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen, RN, attended the Athens Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) symposium on October 23, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.

Presentations:

Dr. Amit Shah, Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, presented “Non-Pharmacologic Treatment for Tachycardia.” Shah practices general cardiology and specializes in implanting pacemakers, defibrillators, and performing electrophysiology studies and ablations of arrhythmia.

Shah started his presentation with quotes:

“You can see a lot just by looking.” Yogi Berra.

“Eyes can’t see what the mind doesn’t know.” Anonymous.

He compared these quotes with reading EKGs (electrocardiograms) and discussed technical aspects of analyzing EKGs. He described various types of tachycardia (fast heart rate). Shah went over common drugs used to control these heart rhythms.

Relating to his statement “there is no such thing as too many EKGs,” Shah told the registered nurses the if the patient is having chest pain, that is the best time for an EKG. Furthermore, he said if the heart rate is slow, get an EKG and if the heart rate is fast, get an EKG.

Shah proceeded to show within the anatomy of the heart, what pathways some of the tachycardic heart rhythms follow and where he would ablate when working on a patient’s heart rhythm in the electrophysiology lab.

The second presentation was a webinar “It’s All About Breathing: ETCO2.” John Gallagher, MSN, RN, CCNS, CCRN, RRT of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter AACN. He talked about End Tidal Carbon Dioxide (ETCO2) and monitoring carbon dioxide known as capnography as well as practical applications.
