Petroleum by-product, paraffin is a cheap ingredient in candles used to make the waxy surface look shiny and appealing. But that’s where the benefits stop. Unbeknownst to many people, candles containing paraffin can stain interior walls and ceilings, trigger respiratory irritation, cause vomiting and nausea, and induce headaches, and are not eco-friendly candles.
 
Unfortunately, most candles in mainstream stores still contain paraffin, which has been recognised by the Environmental Protection Agency as containing toluene and benzene, two cancer causing agents. In stark contrast to paraffin, soy is a renewable, versatile and cost-effective product derived from soy beans, which people have been using for thousands of years. These days, using natural soy wax in candles has been steadily increasing in popularity due to the benefits.
 
“‘What is soy wax and why is it so good for you’ was a common question I was asked, when Angel Sent was founded over ten years ago. Not only were the dangers of burning paraffin based candles unknown to most people, the benefits of soy candles were basically unheard of when I merged into the industry,” says soy wax candles Geelong company founder, Kirsten Macdonald. “I always urge people to consider their candle purchases really carefully. According to Kirsten, the best reasons to buy soy based candles are that they’re:

Natural and eco-friendly: “Soy wax comes from soy beans, which are natural and environmentally friendly,” says Kirsten. “Basically, soy candle makers have taken a waste product and made it a useful, beautiful medium for throwing aromas and oils to scent homes and offices safely.” Soy wax is also biodegradable.

1. Cost-effective: “Soy itself is cost-effective, but soy candles also last longer. They burn at a slower rate than candles containing synthetic products because they have a cooler burning temperature,” Kirsten says.

1. A clean way to burn and throw a richer scent: Soy wax retains its scent and throws the aromatic perfume as it burns. The natural wax also holds on to the colour of the candle, which means it won’t fade over time like synthetic candles do and, unlike a candle containing paraffin, soy candles create less soot on the jar, walls and home surfaces.
