Occupational Allergens in Work Environments throughout Puerto Rico
Zimmetry Environmental provides environmental allergen testing services to identify, resolve and prevent allergic reactions in occupational settings.
Even workers who have not previously show symptoms of an allergic reaction to a substance may develop an allergy to it over time due to repeated exposures.
It may sound odd, but for some workers in Puerto Rico, they may actually be allergic to their work. An occupational allergy occurs when a worker is exposed to a substance or substances that cause them to have an allergic reaction.
Sometimes this can be due to environmental allergens already in the workplace. These could include mold or dust mites in a humid or a water damaged office building. They can also occur as a result of activities that expose a worker to an allergen from a material they come into contact with during their normal work activities. For example, exposure to isocyanates in spray foam insulation.
Reactions may occur when the allergen comes in contact with the worker through common exposure routes such as skin contact, inhalation or ingestion. These allergic reactions can be mild or severe, and in some extreme circumstances could be life threatening.
“A worker exposed to an allergen they are sensitive to will often have a reaction within a short time period, but in some cases the reaction may be delayed,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Another fact that is important to understand is that repeated exposures to the allergen may also increase sensitivity. Even workers who have not previously show symptoms of an allergic reaction to a substance may develop an allergy to it over time due to repeated exposures. Long-term exposure to allergens can even result in asthma in some individuals.”
Some of the more common environmental allergens workers may be exposed to include everything from mold, pollen, latex and dust mites to allergens associated with pets, cockroaches and rodents. While many workers are aware of these allergens, there are also many others that people may not readily recognize. They include substances such as formaldehyde; isocyanates; chromium, nickel and cobalt; and wood and floor dusts to name just a few.
In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, Zimmetry’s environmental professionals help to identify occupational allergens to prevent exposure risks. These services identify the allergen source so that steps can be implemented to prevent others from developing allergic reactions over time. To provide more information about occupational allergens, Zimmetry has recently sponsored an educational video that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/SCFqelSMcNU
