MRSA Infections a Real Threat for Wrestlers and Other Athletes
In August, the New York Post published an article about a $12 million lawsuit involving the outbreak of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections at a Long Island high school. The article reports that the outbreak occurred earlier this year and that school administrators are blamed for a lack of basic cleanliness that led to the outbreak and for not notifying parents in a timely manner when it occurred.
Skin infections associated with sports has taken a more dramatic turn in recent years due to more serious infections that are resistant to treatment options. One of these includes MRSA, which is a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics called beta-lactams. These antibiotics include methicillin and other common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin.
Infections due to MRSA are spread by having contact with someone’s skin infection, personal items they have used and contaminated surfaces. For athletes, these contaminated items may include gym mats, weight equipment, towels, bandages or razors.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that when MRSA infections take place, thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures should be performed on surfaces that are likely to have come in contact with uncovered or poorly covered infections,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Environmental cleaners and disinfectants can be effective at preventing an outbreak or avoiding additional infections. At EMSL, we provide surface testing services and all of the sampling supplies necessary to help pinpoint the source of an outbreak and to confirm that cleaning and disinfection procedures have been effective.”
