Free Legionella Pocket Guide & Webinar Offered by EMSL Analytical, Inc.

New York, NY – WEBWIRE

The worst outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in New York’s history has already claimed 12 lives and infected over 100 people as of Monday, August 10th. The outbreak occurred in the South Bronx and has over 1.4 million residents of the borough along with surrounding communities on edge. With health and safety officials scrambling to prevent more illnesses, EMSL Analytical, Inc. is offering access to its free Legionella Pocket Guide and hosting a free Comprehensive Legionella Webinar on September 16th.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been called in to work with city and state health officials to stop the outbreak. So far, five cooling towers have tested positive for the presence of the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease, but it is unknown at this time if any of the cooling towers caused human infections. Late last week, there was an order for all cooling towers to be inspected and the New York Health Commissioner issued an order for all cooling towers to be disinfected within the next couple of weeks. Legionnaires’ disease is caused by a type of bacteria known as Legionella. It is found naturally in the environment and in manmade environments, usually in water.

Legionnaires’ disease can occur when people breathe in small droplets of water that contain the bacteria. In addition to outbreaks associated with cooling towers, past outbreaks have been linked with hot tubs, hot water tanks, plumbing systems and decorative fountains.

“EMSL is offering tools to help the public along with environmental, health and safety professionals gain a better understanding of Legionella bacteria,” said Diane Miskowski, MPH, Legionella Program Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The pocket guide provides a clear overview and where people should look for the bacteria. It also covers sampling techniques, ways to test for Legionella in the laboratory and emergency remediation.”
