Are Students Facing Lead Exposure Risks at California University?

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, The Stanford Daily published a report about lead-based paints at housing for students attending Stanford University.  According to the article, a graduate student living at one of the university residences spent several years trying to get the university to prevent renovation activities from exposing people at student housing from lead hazards.

The article claims that the student witnessed renovation activities that created large amounts of dusts, paint chips and debris that included lead-based paints.  Although the renovation activities occurred on the outside of the residences, construction dusts were reported inside individual apartments and common areas.

Many residential properties built before 1978 contain lead-based paints.  When paint containing lead begins to degrade or is disturbed during renovation or demolition activities, it can pose a lead poisoning risk.  Children are often at greatest risk due to hand to mouth activities and because their bodies are growing rapidly.

“Fortunately, lead poisoning is entirely preventable by identifying lead hazards and avoiding exposure risks,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.   “Lead-based paints are a significant threat in properties across California, but there are quick and affordable ways to have suspect materials tested.  LA Testing provides analytical solutions, sampling supplies and even consumer test kits to identify this toxic heavy metal.”
