The Los Angeles film Festival has nominated British African film, “Afua’s Diary” to compete in its June edition. The one day event, which will take place in Hollywood Boulevard will recognise creative works of filmmakers from around the world with 50 awards in different categories. “Afua’s Diary” will compete for the best feature film award.

Set in the UK and Ghana, the romantic drama-comedy follows the life of a Ghanaian marketing graduate whose visa is about to run out. Her situation is made worse by the persistent demands from her alcoholic father in Ghana and constant nagging from her lazy and arrogant boyfriend. Afua eventually falls in love with recently divorced businessman, Alan Freeman but falling in love only complicates her situation.

Writer and producer, Bibi Owusu-Shadbolt believes an award for the film would be a victory for African cinema. “You don’t often see African themed films take part in mainstream international competitions so I am really humbled by this recognition. An award for us would open doors for more African films to showcase on the world stage.”

“Afua’s Diary” has enjoyed international success since its first UK screening in December. It picked up a jury’s choice award at the Women Of African Descent film festival in New York in April and was selected among the best of Cannes Pan African film Festival in May. It will also showcase at the BFM International film festival in London. Alan Reading, associate producer of the film attributes the film’s success to its unversal appeal and relatable characters. “The complications brought into the lives of the characters in Afua’s Diary are very real to life. A lot of our audience have either gone through some of the problems themselves or know someone who has. And the subtle comedy, which is cleverly executed makes the movie a favourite of audiences of all backgrounds.”

“Afua’s Diary” is the debut feature film from Pixelex Aspet UK ltd. It stars Cleopatra Wood, Fabio Abraham and KSM among others. Good luck to the cast, crew and the entire production team.
