Chemical Found in Consumer Products and Food Packaging Added to California’s Proposition 65 List

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added bisphenol A, more commonly known as BPA, to the list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause reproductive toxicity for purposes of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65).

BPA is a chemical that has been shown to affect the reproductive systems of laboratory animals.  Some studies have suggested that infants and children may be the most vulnerable to the effects of BPA. Several years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted testing of over 2,500 participants and found BPA was present in nearly all of the subjects’ urine samples.

Bisphenol A is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins found in many consumer products and some food packaging.  For most people, the primary source of exposure to BPA is through their diet. Workers who manufacture products that contain BPA can also be at risk for exposure.

“Due to its wide use, BPA has come under increased scrutiny from health officials in recent years,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Many have concerns over the chemical’s ability to potentially leach into foods and beverages or from medical devices and water supply pipes that were made with BPA.”

LA Testing provides analytical services to detect the presence of BPA in consumer products, food packaging and from environmental samples.  They have also sponsored an educational video about bisphenol A that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/k5TygaVe5Oc.
