Atlanta, Georgia -- Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen attended the Athens, Georgia  Chapter of AACN Symposium on June 23, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.

Use of Sedation in Critical Care:

Dr. Karan Julka, critical care pulmonologist, spoke about using sedation and analgesia in ICUs. Dr. Julka is a leader in the Athens area in arterial hypertension and is boarded in Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.

Regarding sedation Dr. Julka discussed when sedation is needed and pros and cons of various sedative medications. He covered complications arising from pain and anxiety and correctable causes of anxiety in critically ill patients. He also discussed pain management in critically ill patients.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding:

Dr. Qadri specializes in gastroenterology, hepatology and internal medicine. He is boarded in internal medicine. His fellowship was at Cleveland Clinic. He presented various causes of GI bleeding from different locations of the GI tract and the significance of each type of bleed. Images from endoscopies and colonoscopies were shown.

Dr. Qadri also discussed cirrhosis patients. He said the majority of patients who have cirrhosis of the liver have cirrhosis due to a fatty liver or hereditary reasons and the minority are patients with alcohol problems. These patients can lose a massive amount of blood and likely will need a liver transplant.

Inpatient Diabetes Mellitus Management:

Dr. Lela Ward, a hospitalist, is boarded in internal medicine. Dr. Ward discussed insulin physiology. She explained the two types of diabetes mellitus and guidelines for both critical care and non-critical care diabetic patients in the hospital. Hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia emergencies were also presented with appropriate treatments.

Athens, GA AACN:

The Athens Chapter of AACN was begun in 2005 and has provided regular educational opportunities for registered nurses in the area at lost cost. Margie Nicholaus, critical care RN at St. Mary’s Hospital, has organized the symposiums.
