Baby Cribs Recalled Due to Lead Poisoning Hazards

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

Last month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of thousands of baby cribs and furniture after the vintage grey paint used on the items was found to exceed federal lead limits.  The furniture was made in Chile between March of 2014 and March of 2015.  The products were sold online and at specialty furniture stores nationwide.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Lead poisoning is one of the most serious environmental health threats to children in the United States. Elevated blood lead levels can retard young children’s mental and physical development.” Young children are at high risk for lead poisoning.  This is due to the fact that their bodies are growing so rapidly. Also, children tend to put their hands or other objects that may be contaminated with lead paint, chips and dust into their mouths.

The CDC reports that there are no safe blood lead levels in children and that this toxic metal can affect nearly every system in the body. The good news is that lead poisoning is entirely preventable.

“Fortunately, there have not been any published reports of lead poisoning due to the cribs and other related furniture that were recalled yet,” said Joseph Frasca of Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Parents that are concerned about the possible presence of lead in their children’s furniture or due to lead-based paints that are still commonly found in homes built up until the late 1970’s can turn to EMSL Analytical, Inc.  EMSL offers test kits and comprehensive testing services for lead from surfaces, dusts, paint chips and other materials.”
