The enchanting illustrations bring the desert and its creatures to life, and combined with the lovable narratives by Coffey make these two books appealing not just to the young, but also the young at heart.

Former special educator and reading specialist Ethel K. Coffey composes two heartwarming stories that playfully offer positive ways of helping children go through some of life’s challenges in “Cloud Watchers” and “How Meg Changed Her Mind.”

“How Meg Changed Her Mind” tells the story of Meg; a dog who believes her life has been ruined by the newest member of her family. A friend helps her look at her circumstances in a different light. She then learns to accept change and transform her negativity into positive thoughts.

“Cloud Watchers” follows the story of a dog named Baylee, who cannot seem to enjoy life because she is unable to stop worrying. Her best friend, Meg, advises her to seek out a wise old coyote to receive some advice. Desperate to regain her happiness, she seeks out the coyote, who lives on a nearby peak.

Retired English teacher and author of “Red-tailed Rescue,” John E. Irby has this to say about the two books: “‘Cloud Watchers’ is a marvelous, calming tale for children and anyone who has ever been a child. ‘How Meg Changed Her Mind’ is a pleasant story for young children and their extended family, teaching us that negative thinking creates negative situations and positive thinking enhances positive situations.”

Both books are illustrated by artist, Betty Schweitzer-Johnson, who creates a delightful celebration of vivid desert color and texture on each page. The enchanting illustrations bring the desert and its creatures to life, and combined with the lovable narratives by Coffey make these two books appealing not just to the young, but also the young at heart.
