Mold Discovered and Remediated from California High School

Pasadena, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, The Santa Clarita Valley Signal published a report about the discovery of mold in the cafeteria of Valencia High School.  According to the article, once the mold was discovered plans were put in place to remove it during spring break when students and teachers would be out of the building.

Fortunately, the mold was found and removed. Elevated levels of mold can impact a school’s indoor air quality (IAQ) and lead to a host of health issues.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Scientific evidence has long demonstrated an association between poor IAQ and respiratory health effects, including asthma.  Maintenance issues in schools, such as mold and moisture or excessive use of cleaning chemicals, have been shown to trigger asthma and allergies.” In addition, mold can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, expose people to mycotoxins and some types can even cause infections in people with a weakened immune system.

“It’s not uncommon to hear about schools having mold and other IAQ problems,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Tight operating budgets in many districts often mean that preventive maintenance and repairs don’t always happen in a timely manner and mold only needs moisture to grow on many common building materials and furnishing.  At LA Testing, we provide a complete array of sampling supplies and testing services to identify elevated levels of mold, allergens, asthma triggers and other indoor air quality pollutants.  These services can help identify problems and once any issues have been dealt with, testing can help prove the problem has been properly remediated.”
