KPN Selects Lucent Technologies To Supply IMS Solution To Replace Legacy Network While Supporting Existing And New Services

WEBWIRE

SEPTEMBER 06, 2006 - HILVERSUM, The Netherlands – Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced that it has signed a contract with KPN, The Netherlands´ largest service provider, to deploy an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution that will replace KPN’s legacy public switched telephone network (PSTN).

This follows Lucent’s appointment as the prime integrator for its All IP network, announced on August 28 where Lucent Worldwide Services will provide network transformation services including the network design, systems integration, deployment, maintenance and support services. Lucent will also take responsibility in the migration of KPN’s existing services and customers to the new All IP network to meet KPN’s announced marketing objectives.

Lucent’s IMS solution will enable KPN to quickly introduce personalized, next generation blended services – that is the interworking of previously separate applications to create a service tailored to a person’s lifestyle – and to continue to provide today’s services.

“Lucent’s IMS platform provides KPN with a future-proof, scalable and flexible replacement of the legacy voice network to further reduce our cost structure. At the same time, building an IMS core provides us the opportunity to develop the new services KPN wants to offer to business and consumer customers over KPN’s All IP network,”said Paul Hendriks, Program Director All IP of KPN.

Under the agreement with KPN, Lucent will deliver a standards-based IMS solution that enables cost-effective and seamless transition of KPN’s network assets, including the support for number portability, carrier selection, carrier pre-selection, legal intercept, billing and operations support systems.

“The agreement with KPN is one of the first IMS contracts in the world for a legacy voice network replacement and proof of Lucent’s continuing leadership in IMS solutions, ”said Roger Heinz, vice president, Lucent Technologies converged core solutions. “The contract underlines Lucent’s commitment to the market to provide a migration path from the legacy PSTN to a next generation network.”

“This is an excellent example of Lucent’s ability to help customers transform their next generation networks. Our intimate knowledge of the KPN network and proven multi-vendor services capabilities will enable us to help KPN add to its reputation as a leader in communications services,”said Wayne Vande Wall, customer group vice president The Netherlands, Lucent Technologies.

Lucent’s IMS based-solution for KPN includes the Lucent Feature Server for telephony applications, Lucent Session Manager for call session management and application blending, Lucent Unified Subscriber Data Server that offers the home subscriber server function, Lucent Network Gateway, Lucent Network Controller for gateway control, Lucent Real-time Rating and Charging Suite (SurePay® solution), and Lucent VitalSuite® Performance Management Software to identify IP addresses.
