EMSL’s Carle Place Lab Approved by NYS ELAP for the New 198.8 Method for Spray-on Fireproofing Containing Vermiculite

Carle Place, NY – WEBWIRE

EMSL Analytical, Inc. is pleased to announce that its laboratory located in Carle Place, New York has been accredited by the New York State Environmental Laboratory Approved Program (NYS ELAP) for the 198.8 method. This past October, EMSL’s corporate headquarters in Cinnaminson, New Jersey was the first testing laboratory certified for this newly released 198.8 method.

In August, the New York State Department of Health (NYDOH) announced the availability of this method, specifically designed for sprayed-on fireproofing that contains vermiculite (SOF-V). As of November 1, 2014, the older New York methods 198.1 and 198.6 are no longer allowed for the analysis of SOF-V.

The new NYS ELAP 198.8 method is labor intensive and involves a two-stage approach for identification and quantitation of asbestos, including Libby amphiboles, in SOF-V. The first stage requires gravimetric reduction by ashing and acid digestion in order to remove obscuring organic and acid soluble matrix materials prior to PLM analysis for Chrysotile asbestos content.  The second stage uses heavy liquid separation by centrifugation to separate amphibole asbestos, if present, from less dense matrix components.  Any amphibole present in the original sample will be contained in the centrifugate and the concentration can then be reliably determined by PLM point counting analysis.

EMSL Analytical, Inc. has a long history of working with vermiculite and Libby amphibole minerals. The company has been under contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since the inception of the Libby, MT Superfund cleanup, including an on-site laboratory that was established in June of 2000.

“To have two out of 11 of the labs currently holding this accreditation nationwide is another example of EMSL’s commitment to providing our customers with the latest regulatory and scientifically valid solutions to challenging asbestos problems,” stated Robert DeMalo, Senior Vice President of Laboratory Services and Business Development at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Over the last 33 years, EMSL has strived to be at the forefront of asbestos research and method development in order to help solve our client’s complex issues and improve the accuracy of asbestos analytical methods, which significantly contributes to protecting worker and public health.”
