Indoor Allergens & Pollutants that Aggravate COPD Conditions Identified by EMSL

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reports that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 120,000 American lives each year. More than 12 million have been diagnosed with the condition, but another 12 million are likely to have COPD and don’t know it yet.
 
COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and, in some cases, asthma. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “In the United States, tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, although exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.”
