Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, was named one of the beneficiaries of NBC’s three-hour “Red Nose Day” special, which will be televised on Thursday, May 21 (8-11 p.m. EDT) in front of a live audience.

Feeding America is one of 12 poverty-fighting charities that will benefit from this television event. The charity provides free food and groceries to more than 46 million low-income Americans each year, through a nationwide network of 200 food banks that serve 60,000 grocery and meal programs.

The money raised during Red Nose Day will be used to fund programs that address the immediate needs of children and young people living in poverty in the U.S. and internationally in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The money will be split between domestic and international poverty issues.

Other charities that were pre-selected as charity partners are Boys & Girls Clubs of America; charity: water; Children’s Health Fund; Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; The Global Fund; LIFT; National Council of La Raza; National Urban League; Oxfam America; Save the Children and United Way.

"We are very grateful that Feeding America has been selected as a beneficiary of Red Nose Day,” said Bob Aiken, CEO of Feeding America. “Despite recent improvements in the economy, there are still millions of Americans who struggle to make ends meet on low incomes and part-times jobs. The need for emergency food services continues to be at record levels for most of our food banks. This donation will come at a very critical time for us.”

In the U.K., Red Nose Day has raised more than $1 billion in donations in 30 years for organizations addressing poverty.
