Some Palo Alto Residents to Receive Notices about Lead Exposure from Aviation Fuel

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, Palo Alto Online published a report about a legal settlement between suppliers of aviation fuel that contains lead and an environmental advocacy group.  According to the article, as part of the settlement, residents within 1 kilometer of the Palo Alto Municipal Airport will be getting notices about the use of the fuel.  In addition, the fuel suppliers must post signs about the dangers associated with lead.

Due to the fact that leaded gasoline for automobiles has not been available since 1995, many people think its use in fuel is no longer a potential health hazard. However, lead continues to be emitted into the air from certain sources, including aircraft that use leaded aviation gasoline (avgas).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states, “Lead is extremely toxic. Studies show that exposure to high concentrations of lead, particularly in young children, can result in damage to the central nervous system, and may be associated with high blood pressure in adults. Human exposure to lead typically occurs via inhalation of air and ingestion of lead in food, soil, water or dust.”

“It’s important that people realize that lead is still a potential exposure risk today and that those risks are not only associated with lead-based paints in older properties,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “People need to be informed when lead may be present in both occupational settings and in neighborhoods by locations where they could be exposed. At LA Testing, we offer air and surface testing services and all of the sampling supplies needed to identify the presence of lead.  Preventing exposure is the only way to prevent lead poisoning.”
