Lucent´s Services Arm in Japan Announces Pact with Novera to Deliver FTTx Applications to Japanese Service Providers

Tuesday September 05, 2006 - Tokyo -- Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LU) today announced a teaming agreement with Novera Optics Ltd. to provide leading-edge dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transport platforms to service providers in Japan.

The optical offer will leverage Novera Optics’ Lambda-PON™ technology to deliver Fiber-To-The-x (FTTx) applications to end-users. According to the agreement, Lucent services team in Japan will actively market, sell and provide network integration support for DWDM metro transport and PON systems based on Novera´s technology.

Novera Optics´ platforms are designed in a modular form so they may be easily integrated into existing network architectures. The resulting systems offers the potential for significant CAPEX and OPEX savings as carriers deliver FTTx broadband access technologies to their customers.

Novera Optics offers two series of transport platforms: SpeedlLIGHT™ and TurboLIGHT™. By utilizing Novera Optics´ Lambda-PON™ technology, both platforms enable a wide range of differentiated, dedicated, point-to-point connectivity services by allowing any protocol and any data rate to be carried over the same fiber infrastructure.

WDM-PON offers significantly simplified networks. It is designed to deliver a dedicate Lambda per end-user, therefore, eliminating wavelength-specific and expensive tunable laser making the deployment of the technology into metro and access area network possible today. Alternatively, it could be used as an access network extension to support other PON or Active Ethernet solutions.

“The agreement with Novera Optics enables us to offer our customers a unique value-added transport platform that will help as they continue to migrate to next-generation services,” said Lowell Bath, director of services, Lucent Technologies, Japan.

“The relationship between Novera Optics and Lucent strengthens our position in the DWDM PON transport market,” said Bernd Hesse, VP of marketing and business development at Novera Optics. “Entering the Japanese market with a partner like Lucent is a significant milestone for the proven DWDM-PON technology Novera offers.”
