D2 Technologies, InterDigital and Alcatel-Lucent to demonstrate advanced mobile IP communications solution at Mobile World Congress

Santa Barbara, CA – WEBWIRE

D2 Technologies, the market leader in embedded IP communications software platforms, InterDigital (NASDAQ: IDCC), a mobile technology research and development company and solutions provider, and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), an IP networking, ultra-broadband access and cloud technology leader, will debut an advanced IMS solution that supports secure voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) together with VoLTE, IR.94 video call and RCS in a single platform at this year’s Mobile World Congress.

The solution, which includes D2’s mCUE 4G software client, InterDigital’s Smart Access Manager client and Alcatel-Lucent’s IP Communications solution, gives service providers optimized and interoperable VoLTE, RCS and ePDG-based secure VoWiFi functionality to more quickly and efficiently commercialize advanced IP-based communications capabilities over both mobile cellular and Wi-Fi networks. IP-based communications such as RCS, VoLTE (IR.92), secure VoWiFi, and IR.94 video calling can be seamlessly combined with traditional GSM CS and SMS communications to deliver on the GSMA’s “Green Button Promise.”

D2 Technologies’ mCUE 4G embedded software implements these rich-call and rich-messaging features natively in mobile handsets for a completely seamless user experience.

“The move to all-IP communications via VoLTE, IR.94 video calling and RCS not only provides users with richer communications functionality, it also enables operators to offer all of these services over Wi-Fi networks as well as their own mobile networks,” said Doug Makishima, chief operating officer for D2 Technologies. “Alcatel-Lucent is a leader in IMS infrastructure deployments and continues to innovate in mobile IP communications. By working together, we can provide pre-integrated and optimized solutions that accelerate operator deployments of these advanced communications features.”

InterDigital’s Smart Access Manager client improves user experience on cellular and Wi-Fi networks by providing seamless and secure access with intelligent network selection. It enables application traffic management based on real-time network conditions, operator policies and user preferences.

“The quality of experience with seamless and secure access on the Wi-Fi networks is critical for the success of the new services like VoWiFi and RCS,” said James Nolan, Executive Vice President, InterDigital Solutions. “We are excited about enabling the next generation of services using our core mobile technologies such as Smart Access Manager client.”

D2 and InterDigital will be demonstrating these technologies in the Alcatel Lucent booth (Hall 3, booth 3K10) during Mobile World Congress. D2 and Alcatel-Lucent recently announced the successful completion of interoperability testing of key elements of the VoLTE and RCS IMS profiles with both the native and downloadable versions of D2’s mCUE 4G client software.

“We are excited to team with D2 and InterDigital to extend the seamless all IP communication services experience to more consumers and businesses through VoWiFi using the evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG), which is a new element in Alcatel-Lucent vEPC,” said Fran Heeran, General Manager of the IP Communications business at Alcatel-Lucent. “As a result, service providers will be able to provide their mobile customers with greater access to high quality, secure ultra-broadband services from any device, any network, anywhere.”
