Burst Pipe in Beverly Hills Causes Water Damage & Microbial Concerns

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, the local CBS affiliate in Los Angeles broadcasted a report about a water main break on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. According to the article, water gushed onto nearby streets and some residents woke up to find no water in their faucets while several businesses experienced flooding.

Los Angeles is no stranger to water main breaks as pipes in some areas begin to show their age. When these events do occur, water entering homes and businesses can destroy furnishings, belongings and even cause structural damage. Property owners and tenants should also be aware of potential microbial issues if the properties are not thoroughly dried and properly remediated in a timely manner.  Standing water, wet materials and high humidity levels can be a breeding ground for microorganisms such as bacteria and mold in a very short period of time.

“Microbial contaminants can become airborne during cleanup and rebuilding efforts or be left behind if damaged properties are not properly restored,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Mold is often a major concern whenever there is a flooding event as it can cause musty odors and exposure can trigger asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergies and infections in some people.  If the damage has occurred in an older structure there may also be hazards associated with asbestos and lead-based paints during cleanup and rebuilding efforts.”

LA Testing provides comprehensive testing services following any type of flood.  Services include testing for mold, bacteria, allergens and materials that may contain lead and asbestos.  They also recently sponsored an online video about flood cleanup and indoor air quality issues that can be seen at:
