San Diego Fights Lead Poisoning in Homes with New HUD Grant

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, San Diego’s Fox 5 published a report about a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help prevent lead poisoning in the city.  According to the article, San Diego will use the $3.4 million grant to remove lead-based paints (LBPs) from homes with small children.

Contact with this hazardous heavy metal often results from exposure to lead-based paints still found in many older homes. The Fox 5 report states that in San Diego alone there are an estimated 310,000 homes that were built before the 1978 ban on lead in paints.

Lead poisoning is entirely preventable and children under the age of six years old are often at highest risk.  This is due to the fact that they are growing so rapidly and because they tend to put their hands or other objects, which may be contaminated with lead dust, into their mouths.

“The HUD grant to San Diego is great news for the city’s ongoing efforts to prevent lead poisoning,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Unfortunately, the grant is only enough to help remove lead from approximately 150 residences according to the article.  If you suspect you may have lead-based paints in your home, whether from interior or exterior paint, it’s important to have it tested, especially if young children live or visit the property.  At LA Testing, we offer quick and affordable testing solutions to determine the presence of lead in old paints, dusts, soils and other materials.”

LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about protecting children from lead poisoning that can be seen at:  http://youtu.be/LkEqFhNDS-U.
