August 31, 2006 - Sharp Corporation is today announcing that full-spec high-definition AQUOS LCD TVs made at Kameyama Plant No. 2 will be simultaneously launched in markets around the world on October 1, 2006.

Sharp has set up a stable supply system of large LCD panels by making 40- and 50-inch-class panels from the world’s first 8th-generation glass substrates, measuring 2,160 x 2,460 mm. It is also establishing a five-base global production system that brings the location of manufacture close to the main areas of purchase by consumers. With these systems in place, Sharp can supply the world with LCD TVs using made-in-Kameyama full-spec HD LCD panels with an outstanding resolution of 1,920 H x 1,080 V pixels.

With broadcasting infrastructure rapidly switching from analog to digital, worldwide demand for large full-spec HD LCD TVs, which are ideally suited for digital broadcasts, is rapidly increasing.

With a five-base global production system, Sharp can quickly supply world markets with LCD TVs. The five bases, located around the world near areas of purchase by consumers, will use LCD panels made at Sharp’s Kameyama Plant to construct LCD modules and then assemble them into LCD TVs.

Until now, Sharp has done overseas LCD module construction and LCD TV assembly at subsidiaries in China and Malaysia. Starting this September, Sharp’s Mexican base will add LCD module construction to its LCD TV assembly operation. And in January of next year, Sharp will begin operations at a new LCD module plant in Poland in order to strengthen the supply system for the European market. These efforts will enable Sharp to begin full-scale expansion into the world LCD TV market.
Sharp estimates that, with the start of operations at Kameyama Plant No. 2, it can lead the industry in LCD panels 40 inches and larger for more than a year. With that, Sharp aims to secure an overwhelmingly large advantage in the market for large, full-spec HD LCD TVs—products that are ideal for fully enjoying high-quality digital images.
