Independent music artists across the country are set to take the stage at the Midwest Best $1,000 Showcase this weekend, in hopes of winning $1,000 and recognition among some of the industry’s finest and most talented. Masterminded by promoter DJ Whobeta, the event will be held at Studio 618 (809 St. Louis Avenue, East St. Louis, IL) on Saturday, January 24 at 9 PM CST.
“I am rebuilding the integrity of the Midwest hip hop scene and following through with my word,” said DJ Whobeta. “I told people I would start doing showcases giving opportunities for artists to get paid and that’s what I’m doing.” he concluded.
“It’s exciting to have so many artists from across the U.S. come to Studio 618 for a positive cause in hip hop. It’s good for the community of East St. Louis, and it restores the image of the entire St. Louis metropolitan area.” added philanthropist and owner of Studio 618 Clint Collins.
The competition will also feature guest performances from various established artists, including Chicago’s own Kris Warren and Oklahoma native Nina Fame. New West’s leading man Hard Head is also set to perform his new single “Heroin,” featuring Curtis Young, son of hip hop mogul Dr. Dre.
“It feels good to be involved in a positive movement with people from other cities,” said Warren. “Our coming together to make this event happen is a real good look for our culture. I’ll be performing my new single, ‘When I Grow Up,’ which promotes having confidence and acting on your vision.”
Meanwhile, Nina Fame will perform her new single, “Beauty is Pain.” Notorious for lyrics that convey brutal honesty and subtle humor, the female MC is set to deliver an empowering performance at the showcase.
“The song is basically a snippet of what could be an autobiography,” she said of her new track. “Beauty has many struggles — Being over-pursued, not viewed as educated because of looks, and constantly envied by those who don’t feel as pretty.”
