A New Year, 2015 arrives. Lots of resolution are on personal lists. A recent top ten list: loosing weight, quit smoking, save money, cut stress, volunteer, advanced education, less alcohol, better sleep, exercise, and socialize more. All these great commitments to one’s personal improvement can be a challenge, especially if you are thinking about working on several at the same time.

One very popular resolution is learning to play a musical instrument. As it turns out, this just may be the most beneficial New Year’s resolution of them all. The top of that list: Playing the guitar. Why? Washington DC’s top rated guitar teacher, and owner of DC Guitar Lessons, Gregg Hammond had answers. What Hammond shared proved interesting and promising.

“Playing a musical instrument benefits your entire brain. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET)  to measure the activity in the brain when a person is playing a musical instrument helped scientists document that no other type of human activity  produces the amount of neural fireworks going off in a musicians brain”, stated Hammond. “There is a very attractive element of a person who is a guitar player, one of the many reasons it’s popular. The range of notes and chord combinations are almost endless, yet with just a couple of notes, and a few chords you can play hundreds of songs. It’s easy to transport, easy to sing along with, and if you have a good teacher, it’s easy to learn.”

Men’s Health recently posted 10 Scientific Reasons Why You Should Play Guitar. Self Growth Blog offered 7 Benefits of Playing Guitar.

Other benefits, and why it’s listed as one of the best choices as a resolution, Hammond had to say:
“Learning to play guitar reduces stress, it allows the player to communicate emotions, boost social bonding, impress friends, or have a personal journey. Guitar can be quiet or loud. All styles of music can be performed and enjoyed on guitar. It’s easy to maintain, and relatively inexpensive. A guitar player can join a band, building a teamwork ethic. It opens creativity, can burn off calories, and it can replace bad habits like smoking and drinking. Guitarists can volunteer with charities like Guitars Not Guns Children’s Music Charity”, explained Hammond. “As a new years resolution, learning guitar checks several of the most common resolution goals people make for themselves, and accomplishes them at the same time. It’s New Year’s Resolution multitasking. It’s so much fun, and guitar lasts a lifetime. It is the best deal for most budgets, with a sense of accomplishment both immediately and for the rest of your life. You can play for your lover today, and grandchildren years from now.”

How do you know which guitar to buy?
“If you have a good teacher, they should help with recommendations. I am always helping my students find the right guitar. It’s very personal instrument, so you want to get that right. I love helping guitarist get started or move through a wall in their playing.”
