Former Employees of National Sporting Goods Store Sue Alleging Exposure to Mold

Baton Rouge, LA – WEBWIRE

In November, The Louisiana Record published a report about two former employees of a national chain of sporting goods stores that allege they became sick after being exposed to mold at the retailer.  The store in question is located in Gretna and the lawsuit was filed at the 24th Judicial District Court.

According to the article, “The defendant is accused of failing to report building damage to owner, failing to properly maintain the store, failing to make necessary repairs, failing to keep a store in safe condition, failing to take necessary action to avoid personal injuries, failing to furnish reasonably safe employment for employees and failing to properly and promptly inform employees of dangerous work conditions.”

The mold was reportedly the result of water damage from a leaking roof.  Mold can begin to grow on many building materials and furnishing in as short as 24 to 48 hours when moisture is present.  As it grows, and when it is disturbed, spores and mold fragments can be released into the air exposing people in the surrounding area.

“For some people, prolonged exposure to mold can cause them to develop sensitivity to its presence,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Even low levels of mold can cause health issues for people who are particularly sensitive.  In addition to allergies, exposure to mold can trigger asthma and cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a condition that resembles bacterial pneumonia.  For those with a weakened immune system, exposure to some types of fungi associated with water damaged buildings can even result in infections.”

EMSL offers a wide range of analytical services to identify all types of indoor contaminants, including mold, bacteria, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other allergens and potential asthma triggers. The laboratory also provides the tools and testing supplies needed to perform air, surface and bulk sampling.

EMSL has sponsored an online video about some of the health effects of inhaling mold that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/DbKoonHwvHM.
