There are a lot of misconceptions in the public about skin cancer, here are some of the most common ones debunked.
Skin cancer expert Dr Sally Shaw said its important Australians get the facts right to minimise their risks of contracting the most deadly type of cancer.
“One of the most concerning myths is that people with dark skin do not get sun damage or skin cancer,” said Dr Shaw.
“Most people don’t know that Bob Marley, the Jamaican reggae singer, died from melanoma on his big toe.”
“Another popular myth is that if a mole is hairy, then it cannot be skin cancer.”
“We have seen many skin cancers including melanoma with many hairs protruding from the mole.”
Dr Shaw’s top five skin cancer myths debunked:
1. All skin types can get skin cancer
2. Hairy moles can be cancerous
3. Young people get melanoma / not only an old persons cancer
4. A tan does not protect your skin from sun damage
5. Sunscreen does not give you skin cancer
Dr Shaw said it is important for Australians to have a good understanding of skin cancer and their risks, as skin cancer is our national epidemic.
“For most of the older Australians the damage is already done, because they didn’t have sunscreen when they were growing up.”
“Melanoma is the most common cancer for younger Australians and the rates are rising by 3 per cent a year”.
