Health Systems from Alaska to Florida Purchase MData® Enterprise to Enhance Clinical Decision Making

Thomson healthcare workflow solutions help solve clinical decision support challenges by providing faster and better access to patient information to improve outcomes

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., 08/29/2006, MercuryMD, a Thomson healthcare business (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) that provides information-driven workflow solutions to hospitals and physicians, today announced the addition of four health systems to its growing customer base: Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla.; Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska; Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.; and Wilson Medical Center in Wilson, N.C.

The organizations join 220 hospitals from more than 100 healthcare systems utilizing MercuryMD’s MData® Enterprise to securely deliver patient information to clinicians’ mobile devices, tablet PCs, laptops and desktop computers - when and where it is needed - resulting in more informed decisions, faster and consistent treatment, and better patient care.

Munroe Regional Medical Center, a 311-bed hospital, has been a leader in the use of healthcare information technology to drive continuous improvements in both clinical and operational performance. In 2000, Munroe deployed a web-based physician portal to provide better access to clinical information. The portal did not address the fundamental workflow challenge of a mobile workforce and the facility continued to struggle with physicians’ use of slow, error-prone paper-based processes. To solve this challenge, Munroe created a truly mobile environment to benefit physicians, the health system, and most important, its patients.

The selection of MData came after an extensive evaluation process. “We decided on MData because of MercuryMD’s outstanding reputation among its customers,” said Joy Bauer, Munroe’s director of Clinical Information Systems “From an information management perspective, we wanted a responsive system that was clinician-centric and intuitive and that’s what we got. Providence Alaska Medical Center, the state’s largest hospital, likewise chose MData for its reputation to deliver an integrated solution [mobile and web-based] that improves clinical workflow and reduces dependency on paper charts. The decision to deploy MData was made easier based on a recommendation by Inland Northwest Health System in Spokane, Wash, a long time MercuryMD customer.

“Because we are moving our nursing staff to an electronic documentation system in September, we recognize a mobile solution for our physicians, prior to this transition, will help reduce their dependency on paper charts,” said Grace Obey, manager of Providence Alaska’s Project Management Office. “Even with our physicians accessing and printing patient information from computer stations, there continues to be a significant delay transmitting the information - in real time - to the patient’s bedside, which is a potential patient safety risk. Having access to timely lab results [with MData], for example, will help the care team determine the best possible treatment plans for patients.”
