Mold Concerns Close Child Development Center at UC Riverside

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, the University of California at Riverside’s Highlander published a report about the discovery of mold at the Child Development Center.  According to the article, mold was found by the baseboards of the facility.

Students who depend on the child care services are being forced to find other alternatives and over two dozen student assistants are now out of a job.  The type of mold mentioned in the article was Aspergillus, which is commonly found in buildings that have suffered water damage or elevated humidity levels.

Exposure to high levels of mold is known to cause a variety of health concerns.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.”  Aspergillus is also known to cause infections in people with a weakened immune system.

“Children’s lungs are still developing and are more susceptible to infections and any pollution and contaminants they may breathe,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Mold is a known allergen, asthma trigger and can also cause other concerns so keeping children away from a building where mold has been found is a wise decision. At LA Testing, we provide comprehensive laboratory testing services and all of the sampling supplies necessary to help identify the presence of mold and other potential airborne contaminants in child care facilities, homes and other types of buildings.”

LA Testing recently sponsored an educational video about indoor air quality and child care facilities that can be seen at:  http://youtu.be/WebYxfmU-D8.
