Nissan to Co-Host the 15th National Wheelchair Marathon ‘NISSAN Cup Oppama Championship 2014’ in Yokosuka

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN – WEBWIRE

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will sponsor the 15th National Wheelchair Marathon, the “NISSAN Cup Oppama Championship 2014,” acting as the co-host with several other local organizations. The special marathon will take place in the area surrounding Nissan’s Oppama Plant in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on December 5.

Marking its 15th year, the three-day event has contributed to the development of sports for people with disabilities and strengthened bonds between the corporate sector and local communities.

On the third day, the main marathon will be held at GRANDRIVE, Nissan’s proving ground in Oppama Plant and on the adjacent road, which features a collaborative operation between corporates and local communities. More than 500 Nissan employees and local volunteers will work together as route marshals, as they have done every year since the first event in 2000.

A total of about 250 wheelchair marathoners, including accomplished Paralympic athletes from all over Japan will participate in the three-day event.

In addition to the main race, other events will be held to increase awareness and understanding of disability within the community. On the first day, at Yokosuka City gymnasium, students of Iwato and Natsushima elementary schools will be encouraged to try sitting in a wheelchair. On the second day, a time trial in wheelchairs will be held at GRANDRIVE. Elementary school students, along with other students and adults, can participate in this session with a wheelchair, regardless of disabilities.

Nissan employees may further their support of athletic organizations for people with disabilities by contributing to the “Taiyo Fund,” which was created by the company for this purpose.
