More than 100 adventure enthusiasts are headed for Bendigo to take part in a 25km cycling, running and kayaking odyssey through an old gold mine this month.

Jetts Adventure Race event organiser and adventure racing expert Serge Kurov said that the event, which takes place on November 23rd, is different to regular triathlons in that its based on navigation and team skills and is much more high-octane.

“A lot of people dream of taking on an outdoor adventure challenge but they don’t know how to safely organise it,” said Mr Kurov.

“Fears tend to creep up and they are worried about setting off into unfriendly and unfamiliar environments,” he said.

“There is definitely a risk in taking part in these kinds of activities, however joining in an event that is well organised, makes them significantly lower.”

“A lot of the participants do these kinds of races because they want to challenge themselves and test their limits.”

“It’s not only hard-core dare devils who take part either.”

“In previous years we’ve seen quite a few women teams enter as well as people who are in older age brackets too.”

“A race like this pushes people both mentally and physically.”

“They have to navigate their way through the course using a map and compass.”

“Of course it’s a challenge but the sense of accomplishment at the end is huge.”

Mr Kurov said the main components of the race are:

·       Team effort: In teams of two participants will have to navigate the 25km course together – finishing is only possible is it’s as a team.
·       Hiking: Navigating off-road mining holes, hikers will have to locate six checkpoints as fast as they can on 4km course.
·       Kayaking: Stability and teamwork will be tested as pairs attempt to paddle around the beautiful Crusoe Reservoir Lake on double kayaks.
·       Mountain biking: Some 15km of dirt tracks will be navigated through the northern part of the park.
·       Navigation: A key component of the race, which will balances mental skills and endurance abilities.

The Jetts Adventure Race, organised by Adventure Junkie event management, attracts participants from across Victoria and this will be the second year it is being held in Bendigo.

The race will take place in Bendigo on Sunday, November 23rd.
