Red Cross Issues One-Year Report on Typhoon Haiyan
The American Red Cross today released a one-year report on its work in the Philippines and how donations have helped families recover and rebuild from Typhoon Haiyan.
More than one million homes were damaged or destroyed when Typhoon Haiyan—the strongest storm ever recorded in the Philippines—made landfall on November 8, 2013.
The global Red Cross network has reached more than one million people with emergency assistance and longer-term recovery programs in areas impacted by the typhoon. During the first months after the storm struck, American Red Cross emergency relief specialists supported the global Red Cross response in distributing tarps, water cans, mosquito nets, hygiene kits, cash grants and other relief supplies to families. Since that time, the American Red Cross has been focusing on helping communities recover by investing in projects such as fixing houses, installing water pumps and latrines for communities, and reviving people’s livelihoods by replacing lost items like farm tools and fishing boats.
As people and communities in the Philippines continue to recover, the American Red Cross is rebuilding schools damaged by the storm, providing entrepreneurs with seed money, training local volunteers on disaster preparedness, and helping people move into new homes that are better able to withstand future storms. The American Red Cross is working closely with the Philippine Red Cross and other Red Cross Red Crescent societies to meet the most critical community needs.
“In the coming year, Typhoon Haiyan donations to the Red Cross will continue to help rebuild lives and communities through integrated projects, which will focus on infrastructure repair, job generation, water and sanitation improvements, household construction, disaster preparedness and health initiatives,” said Harold Brooks, senior vice president, International Operations, American Red Cross.
As of September 30, the Red Cross has spent or made commitments to spend $79.5 million, more than 90 percent of the $87.7 million donated to it for Typhoon Haiyan relief and recovery efforts.
