Allergies or a Common Cold – Indoor Allergen Testing May Provide the Answer
Puerto Rico’s Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor air quality (IAQ) and allergen testing services to identify the cause of indoor allergies.
To prevent catching a cold, people need to prevent the virus from getting into their body, but if it allergies they are really suffering from then they need to avoid exposure to the allergen or allergens.
Most years, the cold and flu season starts in late fall and runs through mid-spring. Although a person can catch a common at any time of the year, the winter months are when medical professionals generally see the peak in the number of people coming down with a cold.
However, that runny nose, sneezing and congestion could also be due to allergies instead of the common cold. Quite often it can be difficult to tell the two apart since both colds and allergies can share many of the same symptoms.
A cold is caused by a virus, and there are hundreds of different viruses that can cause a person to become sick. The onset of a cold’s symptoms usually takes several days to appear and can then last from a few days to a few weeks. Symptoms of a cold may include a cough, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, runny nose and sometimes a fever and watery eyes.
Allergies are caused by exposure to allergens that may be encountered either outdoors or indoors. Outdoor allergens include such things as pollen or mold and common indoor allergens frequently include mold, pollen, dust mites, animal dander and allergens from latex, rodents and insects. Allergic symptoms may last from days to months and can occur seasonally or even all year long. Symptoms may occur immediately after exposure to the allergen or they can be delayed. Common symptoms include a runny nose and itchy or watery eyes. Less frequently there may be a cough, fatigue or a sore throat due to a runny nose. Body aches and fever are not generally considered allergy symptoms.
“To prevent catching a cold, people need to prevent the virus from getting into their body, but if it allergies they are really suffering from then they need to avoid exposure to the allergen or allergens,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “At Zimmetry, we offer indoor air quality monitoring services that includes testing for a wide range of allergens. By identifying what allergen or allergens may be present, people who suffer from allergic reactions can take proactive measures to dramatically reduce or eliminate their exposure and stop having allergic reactions in their home, school or place of business.”
