Asbestos Discovery Temporarily Closes Humboldt State University’s Health Center

South Pasadena, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, The Lumberjack published an article that reported that asbestos had been found during a remodeling project of the Student Health Center at Humboldt State University.  The article stated that facility staff identified some construction debris that included tiles and upon further investigation the mastic glue used on the tiles was confirmed to contain asbestos.

For many years, asbestos was added to a number of common building materials to increase strength and durability and to provide some insulating and fireproofing properties.  This included some floor tiles and mastics that can cause exposure risks during renovation and remodeling activities if proper safety procedures are not followed.  In addition to floor tiles and mastics, asbestos was used in other materials such as cement pipes, siding and wallboard; acoustic and decorative plasters; insulation; ceiling tiles; roofing shingles and felt; adhesives; caulking; and numerous other materials.

Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. A person cannot tell with the naked eye if a material or dust contains asbestos, but air, surface and bulk testing can quickly and economically provide that answer.

“Fortunately, the asbestos was discovered at the Student Health Center so that proper procedures could be put in place to avoid any further exposure risks to workers, students and faculty,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “To prevent these types of unexpected asbestos discoveries, LA Testing provides a comprehensive array of asbestos testing services that provide critical information before any building maintenance, restoration, remodeling or demolition activities take place to prevent creating exposure risks for people.”

Earlier this year, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about malignant mesothelioma and asbestos that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEyopPp9Ck4.
