Compared to its spring Shred Days, CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union saw a 10% increase in attendance at its 2014 Fall Shred Days in Alexandria and Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The 10% increase came despite an all-day rain. Both locations were busy: 386 residents brought 15,075 pounds of documents to the Alexandria location for shredding, while 209 brought 7,060 pounds to the Harrisonburg event, according to CommonWealth One Shred Day organizers. The 22,135 pound total was a 12% increase over CommonWealth One’s spring Shred Days.

“Every trash day, identity thieves tour neighborhoods looking for old documents they can turn into cash.  CommonWealth One has helped area residents safeguard consumers’ personal information by hosting our bi-annual Shred Days event to dispose of those documents in the best way possible,” said Charlotte Cash, President/CEO. “It’s an event that really highlights our mission to be an active and contributing member of the communities we serve,” she added.

The free event, which originated in 2010, is open to the community, not just credit union members. Non-members, comprising most of those who attended, were able to experience first-hand CommonWealth One’s strong commitment to community activism.
