Mel’s Tasty Bites takes on Fast Food Canteen Operators.

Carmel Raineri, Owner of Mel’s Tasty Bites, said School Canteens could be the key to reversing the tide of child obesity.

“In NSW it is mandatory for schools to provide food and drinks consistent with the Australian canteen guide to healthy eating, yet this does not seem to be in place with most schools, especially primary schools,” Ms Raineri said.

“Children start school as young as five years old and are being introduced to high fat, sugar and salty food and drinks predominantly available in most school canteens.” If all schools were supporting and following the healthy canteen guidelines, we may be able to help the obesity epidemic we have here in Australia.

We need to introduce healthier eating habits at our school canteens, rather than confectionery, soft drinks and all those pre-packed frozen foods that are all full of preservatives,” Ms Raineri concludes.

“All our food at our canteen’s are prepared and made fresh every day from scratch, from our popular lasagne dishes and spaghetti bolognese, chicken schnitzel, burger patties, tabouleh, banana bread and even our banana smoothies, the kids love it.”

“I have been running school canteens for fifteen years now and I am a huge believer that healthy canteens are setting an example for our children of today, we show our children that healthy eating can also be very delicious, but nutritious at the same time. If they learn to eat healthy from a young age they will continue to do so throughout their adult life,” Ms Raineri states

“Most school canteens in Australia are privately tendered out now for a weekly fee to the school, the problem now is that most school’s are accepting the highest tender fee offered rather than having a healthy canteen operating in their school, It should not be about money, this is about our children and our future generation,” Ms Raineri concludes

Ms Raineri has given a few key points for operating a Healthy School Canteen:

  • School Canteens should be following the healthy Canteen Guide and most items on the menu need to be in the Green Spectrum

  • A healthy Canteen should not be selling Fried Foods and Soft-Drinks

  • Parents can participate by giving Ideas and Suggestions to the Canteen Operator for the Canteen Menu.
