Caribbean’s EHS Experts Identify PAHs & Other Hazardous Chemicals

Zimmetry Environmental provides air testing and monitoring services to identify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other harmful pollutants.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

There are many ways that people working in industrial environments or just because of where they live, can be exposed to these chemicals.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, commonly referred to as PAHs, are a group of chemicals that are formed during the incomplete burning of coal, oil and gas, garbage, or other organic substances like tobacco or charbroiled meat. PAHs are often found as a mixture containing two or more of these chemical compounds.

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that some PAHs may reasonably be expected to be carcinogens.  Some people who have breathed or touched mixtures of PAHs and other chemicals for long periods of time have developed cancer. PAHs have caused cancer in laboratory animals when they breathed air containing them, ingested them in food or had them applied to their skin.

Some PAHs are manufactured for use in industrial processes. These pure PAHs usually exist as colorless, white or pale yellow-green solids. PAHs are found in coal tar, crude oil, creosote and roofing tar, and a few are also used in medicines or to make dyes, plastics and pesticides.

“PAHs have been found in at least 600 of the 1,430 National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “There are many ways that people working in industrial environments or just because of where they live, can be exposed to these chemicals.  Breathing air from municipal trash incineration facilities, asphalt product plants, smokehouses or where coal-tar is used can expose people to these compounds.  Even breathing smoke from cigarettes, wood fires, vehicle exhaust and agricultural burn smoke creates exposure risks.  Anyone working at or living by a hazardous waste site and even just eating grilled or charred meats can potentially expose them to PAHs.”

To help identify hazardous environments associated with exposure to PAHs in industrial and residential settings, Zimmetry Environmental provides testing and monitoring services across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.  Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about PAHs that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/gJInmG51Pyo
