Jomo Kenyatta International Airport expands use of Rockwell Collins common use passenger processing and self service solutions

Self-service technology provides new convenience for passengers traveling through busiest airport in East and Central Africa

London, UK – WEBWIRE

Rockwell Collins announced today that it has completed the expansion of the company’s ARINC Common Use Passenger Processing Systems (CUPPS) and Common Use Self Service (CUSS) solutions at the major East African hub airport of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya. This is Rockwell Collins first major CUPPS installation in sub-Saharan Africa.

Having installed its passenger processing solutions in three of the airport terminals, Rockwell Collins has expanded coverage with an additional 64 CUPPS-compliant ARINC vMUSE common use passenger processing workstations and 16 common use self-service CUSS check-in kiosks in the newly opened T1A terminal, bringing the combined totals at the airport to 181 CUPPS and 68 CUSS. The company also designed and built an on-site core room and Local Area Network (LAN), as well as a new back-up power supply system, ensuring that there is no single point of failure for the airport’s power supply.

The installation of the CUSS self-service kiosks represents a new service for travellers passing through the airport. In addition to the ARINC vMUSE and self-service kiosk installations, ARINC Managed Services (AMS) will provide 24/7 on-site support.

“Rockwell Collins’ expertise in engineering new core infrastructure provided a smooth migration to ARINC vMUSE without disrupting passengers or the airport,” said Mr. Peter Ndegwa Mungai, the C.L.U.B Chair and project manager, who was instrumental in conceptualizing the project and working closely with Rockwell Collins to get all the stakeholders at the airport on board. “I am thrilled that this solution is helping the airlines operating at Jomo Kenyatta improve their passenger processing thus increasing customer satisfaction and their travel experience.

Rockwell Collins proactive monitoring of the entire solution ensures that issues are addressed before they even have a business impact on the airlines operations. This has led to reduced downtimes or outages,” noted Mr. Ndegwa Mungai.

The ARINC vMUSE platform maximizes the use of airport infrastructure through shared workstations, reducing the need for complex and expensive hardware systems. It supports any application an airline chooses to use and is fully scalable to any size airline or airport. The open design of vMUSE allows for easy integration with flight information displays, baggage reconciliation, gate management, and operational databases. CUPPS technology significantly reduces the time and effort necessary for deploying airline applications by standardizing technical requirements, leading to cost savings and faster deployment.

With additional CUPPS installations in Botswana and Cairo, Egypt, Rockwell Collins’ work at Jomo Kenyatta represents another successful milestone in the company’s expansion throughout Africa.
