Barrick Deploys First uGPS Rapid Mapper™ at Turquoise Ridge Mine

Montreal, QC – WEBWIRE

September 26, 2014 – Winnemucca, NV: Barrick Gold Inc. has recently purchased and deployed their first uGPS Rapid Mapper™ unit at the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The unit will be used by their surveying team, under the supervision of the Technical Services department.

This new and exciting product is the first of its kind, offering 3D point cloud data acquisition from a mobile platform. The uGPS Rapid Mapper™ product, developed by Peck Tech Consulting Ltd., is expected to be used for a variety of applications, such as long distance open-loop mapping, shotcrete thickness measurements, volume calculations, rapid development pick-ups, and eventually shaft scanning.  Members of Peck Tech’s technical team were on site to support the initial deployment, and also to provide hands-on training to Turquoise Ridge surveyors and engineers.

In response to the launch of the unit at the Turquoise Ridge Mine, Andrew Chapman, Product Manager for Peck Tech Consulting Ltd., said, “I was impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of the Turquoise Ridge team during the deployment of their first uGPS Rapid Mapper.  I am confident that this product will provide useful and unique results for this forward-thinking operation. I want to thank the Barrick Gold Inc. Mining Information Technology team for the support they have provided since we launched the uGPS project in 2011. Their guidance during the product development phase and into commercialization has proven invaluable.”

The uGPS Rapid Mapper™ that will be used at the Turquoise Ridge Mine is equipped with optional on-board Wi-Fi, is vehicle agnostic and infrastructure independent, and requires only one cable for operation (power).  It is controlled from the passenger seat via web interface on any standard laptop, tablet or smartphone.

This innovative technology opens the door for some new cost savings opportunities, through its capability for fast and simple 3D scanning, and is poised to change the way surveyors and engineers tackle their day-to-day challenges underground.  From rapid measure-ups at month end to high accuracy volumetric analyses (i.e., overbreak, cost per foot), these valuable opportunities have generated significant interest from many mining companies.

Peck Tech Consulting Ltd. remains at the forefront of mining technology and continues to develop innovative products for the mining industry, such as the uGPS Rapid Mapper™, that have the potential to revolutionize mining operations throughout the globe.  Their recent strategic partnership with Neptec Technologies Corp. (experts in LiDAR and software development) and ongoing support of the forward-thinking researchers at the Queen’s University Mining Systems Laboratory provide a world-class knowledge base for product development.
