Why Won’t My Baby Sleep – Information Overload

The enormous amount of information related to baby sleep that can be found on the internet and in books, magazines and newspaper articles are causing confusion for parents due to sheer information overload.

And even though everyone keeps telling Samantha that sleepless nights are a “rite of passage” for new parents, or that the problem will eventually resolve itself, she’s really suffering.

Baby and toddler sleep expert and Director at Dream Babies Consulting Susan Connolly reflected on one of many emails she has received from a client and stated that despite not knowing the mother personally her story bought her to tears.

“Samantha wrote that she had been looking forward to becoming a mother ever since she could remember, that she and her husband tried for about a year, and finally, after an exhausting pregnancy, they’d welcomed their beautiful baby daughter into the world” said Ms Connolly.

“That was 6 months ago and since then neither her husband nor her has had a good night’s sleep.” she said.

“And even though everyone keeps telling Samantha that sleepless nights are a “rite of passage” for new parents, or that the problem will eventually resolve itself, she’s really suffering.”
“Samantha and her husband are suddenly fighting all the time, she can’t focus at work, and worst of all she doesn’t feel like she’s capable of being the mother she wants to be, all because she’s just so tired.”

Ms Connolly states that the part of Samantha’s letter that really upset her was the line that read “How did I let this happen? I read all the books.... I took the classes... I was READY! And now I feel like I just can’t do anything right"

Ms Connolly suggested that Samantha was not alone in her thinking at that it’s her belief that millions of parents are going through exactly the same thing right now and this is because of the information overload available to parents.

“If you Google “how to get your baby sleeping,” you’ll find -- literally -- more than a hundred million different “solutions” to your problem.”

“That’s a LOT of information. Some of it’s great. Some of it’s awful. And some of it is just plain dangerous.” states Ms Connolly

“It’s nobody’s fault. We all do the best we can as mothers. But the truth is that babies don’t come with an instruction manual -- and that first year is unbelievably complicated and stressful (but also full of blissful moments that you will never forget.)”

“The important thing for families to understand is that sleep problems, while very common, don’t have to happen.”

“Babies and toddlers want to sleep and are happier, healthier, and more able to learn when they can do so successfully.”

Through one-on-one sessions and group seminars, Susan Connolly helps parents develop a customized sleep plan that addresses their family’s specific challenges, using techniques and strategies from The Sleep Sense™ Program developed by world-renowned sleep expert Dana Obleman.
