Patented Service Quality Management Technology Gives iPass Users Access to the Highest Quality Network Connections in 160 Countries

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — August 24, 2006 — iPass Inc. (NASDAQ: IPAS) announced it has been granted a continuation patent (US Patent 6,985,945) on the network quality monitoring functionality of the iPass service. The continuation extends the protections previously granted to iPass in 2003 for the company’s Service Quality Management (SQM) technology.

With more than 3,000 enterprise customers and the world’s largest broadband roaming network, iPass is the global leader in providing software and network solutions that unify the management of remote and mobile connectivity, devices and security. iPass services allow organizations to keep users connected to the Internet and corporate networks and manage endpoint devices by distributing and updating software, removing out-of-date and rogue applications, and working to ensure that remote and mobile computers have the latest protection against viruses and other malicious threats.

“This technology allows us to provide our customers with the best network connectivity available, bar none. iPass users expect the highest quality connections, whether they are in or out of the office,” said Barbara Nelson, Vice President, Architecture and Design, iPass. “SQM technology contributes significantly to this.”

Using SQM technology, the company manages more than 60,000 wireless (Wi-Fi and 3G) broadband and 40,000 dial up access points in 160 countries. The patented technology gathers performance data from remote devices, such as notebook PCs and handhelds, connected to the iPass network. With this quality information, iPass is able to evaluate connection attempts, troubleshoot problems, and direct users to higher quality networks that will provide the best performance—working to ensure that their experience is optimum at all times.

“Any Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business must continually collect information on the quality of the user experience and adjust the network parameters accordingly to ensure high quality. iPass recognized this long ago and took the steps to protect it’s unique approach,” said Ken Denman, CEO of iPass. “We are proud to have our vision validated through business model success and the granting of important protection of our intellectual property.”

The continuation patent deepens the protection of Service Quality Management technology, adding 66 new claims to the 44 claims that were covered by the original patent.
