The new modernized alimony bill gives the New Jersey Court Judges stricter guidelines when ordering alimony. Additionally, the new law, which takes effect immediately, also allows puts an end to what has been known as “permanent alimony”. Marriages lasting less than twenty years cannot have alimony awards longer the duration of the marriage. Furthermore, the paying spouse will be allowed to end their obligations when they retire or if the receiving spouse begins to live with a paramour. These are huge changes from the old laws.

While this bill cannot be used retroactively, it can be used by persons in making future support modification. Ms. Ginzburg, a family law litigator, is confident that this new law will allow her to aid clients saddled with or facing long term obligations.
