QUEENSLAND, Australia August 2014 – The Australian tourism industry is not “equipped” to accommodate the 80 per cent of travellers planning their trips online, according to a travel tracking study commissioned by Google last year.* The digital benchmark survey of tourism operators in Australia found that while 84 per cent of businesses have websites, only one third are optimised for search engines.

Fifty eight per cent of people starting their holiday research begin it in a search engine, and 65 per cent of domestic travellers in Australia use the Internet to book accommodation.  However less than 50 per cent of websites offer online bookings.** And while 51 per cent of leisure travellers watch online travel videos, only 23 per cent of Australian tourism companies post online videos on their websites.

Moreover, the Google research reveals that 85 per cent of Australians use smartphones and tablets while holidaying, with 58 per cent relying on information online to decide on what to do or where to go, yet half of all Australian tourism industry operator websites aren’t mobile-friendly.

Digital tourism expert and This is Our Australia director, Fabienne Wintle is now touring regional Australia to share her digital tourism wisdom and give small businesses the tools and knowledge to use social media for business success.

Known as the ‘go to’ web and digital person in the tourism industry, Fabienne provides digital marketing training to businesses striving to prosper in the digital economy. “I really enjoy teaching the business benefits of using social media, and giving inside tips on how to use social media to promote your business,” says Fabienne. “There are so many untapped marketing and promotional opportunities for the Australian tourism industry through the Internet, but a lot of business owners don’t know how to reach their online community.”  www.thisisouraustralia.com

Through her ‘This is Our Australia’ nationwide trip to regional towns, Fabienne will focus on capturing every moment of her family’s adventure and sharing them with her online followers to inspire them to get up and discover their own backyard. In the process she will be upskilling Australia’s tourism businesses in digital productivity and marketing.

Fabienne is on the Board of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council and is a member of Caravanning Queensland. Among her achievements is the Young Achiever Queensland Tourism Award and the Griffith University Business School Outstanding Alumnus award. www.thisisouraustralia.com

In March 2014, Southbank Institute of Technology Director of Education Brett Kapernick recommended Fabienne to any organisation or entity as she “understands the real meaning of customer value proposition and how to use social media to promote your business.” “Fabie is an incredibly bright and talented digital strategist and entrepreneur. She has a keen ability to identify a business problem and solve it with a focus on performance, digital productivity, customer value, and business outcomes. I have been working alongside her for the past three years on the board of QTIC and have seen her utilise technology to enable smoother business practices,” says Brett.

“She is an advocate for the use of social media for business, smart digital technology in small businesses and has been at the forefront of the implementation of digital technologies into Australia’s tourism industry for almost 10 years. She shares ideals and concepts broadly and is true advocate of relationship building and its benefits in creating sustainable business partnerships.”
