Are New Buildings in Canada Being Outfitted with Pipes Containing Asbestos?
Earlier this summer, The Globe and Mail published an article about new buildings being constructed across Canada that are being outfitted with pipes that contain asbestos. The article “Pipes with asbestos still used in new buildings” discusses asbestos-cement pipes being installed in new installations and potential health concerns.
According to the article, “Unlike most other developed countries, Canada has never banned the use of asbestos and continues to import and export asbestos-containing materials, such as pipes and tiles….”
Most people are aware that many older buildings contain asbestos in everything from insulation and flooring to shingles, but far fewer are aware that it is still being used in new construction. The article brings to light the fact that large amounts of money is being spent across Canada to remove asbestos from buildings while new buildings are still being outfitted with pipes that contain the hazardous material.
In addition to causing mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. “While asbestos-containing products that are not friable or airborne do not pose an immediate health risk, in many cases, it is just a matter of time before the materials are disturbed or begin to break down over time,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc., one of the largest asbestos and lead testing laboratories in North America. “For those with concerns about the materials in their new or old construction that may contain asbestos, EMSL provides rapid testing services so that suspect materials can be identified and exposure risks minimized. EMSL has laboratories in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto to provide easy access to these important services and sample collection supplies.”
EMSL also recently sponsored an educational video about malignant mesothelioma and asbestos that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEyopPp9Ck4.
