Cystic Fibrosis and Fungal Infections Linked in New Study

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, a study from the University of Manchester caught the attention of the medical community and professionals who deal with indoor mold contamination issues.  The study found that almost 50% of adult patients who suffer from cystic fibrosis (CF) are also infected with Aspergillus, a common type of fungi found in the environment and in water-damaged buildings. The research examined CF patient data from 30 countries.

There are an estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States who have CF and California is home to many.  The research highlights the importance of CF patients avoiding exposure to elevated levels of Aspergillus in their homes, schools and businesses.

Aspergillus is a common fungus consisting of several hundred species that are found in various climates worldwide.  It is very common in the environment and can be found in soils, plants and in decaying plant matter. It is also found in household dust and some building materials that have been exposed to moisture.

Aspergillosis is the name of the disease caused by Aspergillus.  There are many different kinds of aspergillosis, including allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA).  The fungus causes allergic respiratory symptoms such as wheezing and coughing, but does not actually invade and destroy tissue. Another kind of aspergillosis is known as invasive aspergillosis, a disease that usually affects people with immune system issues. In this condition, the fungus invades and damages tissues in the body. Invasive aspergillosis most commonly affects the lungs, but can also cause infection in many other organs and can spread throughout the body.

“It is not healthy for anyone to be exposed to high levels of Aspergillus, but this new research sheds light on the need for those with CF to be especially vigilant,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “At LA Testing, we provide analytical services and testing supplies to determine the presence of Aspergillus and other types of microorganisms to help prevent exposure to these allergens, asthma triggers and pathogens.”
