Foodshare Joins National Network of Food Banks Receiving Donations From foodtweeks™

Mobile App Technology Applied to Redistribute Calories from Weight-Conscious Consumers to Struggling Members of Community

Stamford, CT – WEBWIRE

A couple days of using the app and “tweeking” calories from everyday meals means a donation that results in a healthy meal for a hungry family. Just as important, the funds generated by foodtweeks users also support Foodshare’s programs that build self-sufficiency and help people get back on their feet, which rebuilds communities and families. It’s hard to think of any app that has more positive consequences for more people.

foodtweeks ™, a free app that combines weight management with feeding the hungry, today announced that Foodshare in Bloomfield, CT has joined the ranks of foodtweeks™-affiliated food banks.

Building technology that creates a close-knit and socially responsible population is important, and foodtweeks™ has answered the call. Each time a user reports “tweeking” trimming calories from their food), Foodshare will receive donations from foodtweeks™, enabling the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to hungry families.

Engaging social media by posting a “tweek“ on Facebook or Twitter doubles or triples each donation which creates more opportunity for socially conscious citizens. foodtweeks™ makes it possible for weight-conscious consumers to be “heroes” who serve their communities by feeding the hungry, and all they have to do is cut calories from their favorite foods in an easy, enjoyable way.

“Foodshare is very pleased to be working with foodtweeks in our effort to solve hunger in greater Hartford. The free app lets people who want to cut calories help people who don’t get enough calories, and it improves the health of both groups at the same time. And it does that in a way that is simple and effective,” said Wendy Kohn, Director of Development at Foodshare. "A couple days of using the app and “tweeking” calories from everyday meals means a donation that results in a healthy meal for a hungry family. Just as important, the funds generated by foodtweeks users also support Foodshare’s programs that build self-sufficiency and help people get back on their feet, which rebuilds communities and families. It’s hard to think of any app that has more positive consequences for more people.”

Not only does foodtweeks™ donate to food banks, but it also offers a unique approach to weight management. Users simply tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing. The app instantly displays images of suggested “tweeks” that remove enough calories to make a positive difference – but not in a way that changes the taste or leaves users hungry.

This is possible because foodtweeks™ maintains a crowdsourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to “tweek” everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain to grocery store purchases, and homemade dishes of every kind.

“foodtweeks™ is proud and excited to support Foodshare,” said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks™ Executive Vice President of Partnership Development. “Foodshare is a highly committed and respected organization that provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community.”

foodtweeks™ is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week, according to Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks™ may contact Ms. Shannon by email at  elisa@foodtweeks.com .

Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks™, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.
